The original Queen’s Beasts were created largely as a symbolic gesture. Positioned outside of Westminster Abbey for Elizabeth’s 1953 coronation, they were meant to protect the Queen as she acceded to the throne. Because each beast was associated with the Queen’s royal lineage, one could argue that it was the royal tradition itself that was both protecting and serving as a guiding light for Her Majesty.

On the reverse face of 2020 1/4 oz Gold Queen’s Beast Coins we see the White Lion of Mortimer. This design is also by Jody Clark and features the lion facing right and holding a decorative shield.
