The Austrian Mint took a unique approach to the introduction of its Austrian Gold Philharmonic bullion coin series. When it introduced the series in 1989, a 1 oz gold coin was available as is the case with most other major gold bullion programs, but it chose the 1/4 oz gold coin as the only fractional-ounce option to join it that year. It continues in production to this day. Right now, 2020 1/4 oz Austrian Gold Philharmonic Coins are available to purchase online from JM Bullion.

The Austrian Mint introduced the Gold Philharmonic in 1989 with 1 oz and 1/4 oz gold coins. Originally, the coins were issued face values in Austrian Schillings in an era before the adoption of the Euro currency in the European Union. In 2002, the coins dropped the Austrian Schilling in favor of the Euro, making it the only gold bullion coin series in Europe with denominations marked in Euro.
On the obverse of 2020 1/4 oz Austrian Gold Philharmonic Coins is an image of the Great Pipe Organ. The organ is a permanent fixture of the Musikverein, the concert hall in Vienna where the national Philharmonic Orchestra performs most of its concerts.
The reverse side of 2020 1/4 oz Austrian Gold Philharmonic Coins includes an array of musical instruments. Commonly used by members of the orchestra, in this design you notice a cello in the center flanked on either side by two violins. The background contains a bassoon, harp, and a French horn.
Designs on the Austrian Philharmonic Series bullion coins were created in 1989 by Thomas Pesendorfer for the Austrian Mint. The mint was founded in 1194 by Duke Leopold V and now serves as the official sovereign mint of the Republic of Austria.
