Augustus Saint-Gaudens created the iconic design now featured on the American Gold Eagle in 1907. He originally created the image with 46 stars around the figure of Liberty, one for each of the US states in the Union in 1907. The design was one of four of Liberty he submitted to the US Mint for consideration on American gold coins and the US penny.

This image of Liberty was eventually chosen for the $20 Gold Double Eagle, while another Liberty design from Saint-Gaudens was chosen for the $10 Gold Eagle circulation coin. The Liberty design he created was intended as a high-relief strike, but the US Mint lacked the technological capacity at the time to strike a high-relief image. Liberty was featured with 46 stars in the design from 1907 to 1911, with two more added in 1912 to reflect the admission of Arizona and New Mexico into the Union.

Now, a modified Lady Liberty design features on the 2020 1/4 oz American Gold Eagle. Here, Liberty is featured with a large torch in her right hand and an olive branch in her left hand with the US Capitol Building at her feet. The circle of stars around her figure has grown to 50 for this release to include the admissions of Hawaii and Alaska into the Union since the $20 Gold Double Eagle exited circulation.

Miley Busiek’s American bald eagle family is depicted on the reverse of 2020 1/4 oz American Gold Eagle coins. The image here includes a male eagle flying over the nest as a female watches over a hatchling in the nest.

These 2020 1/4 oz American Gold Eagles are perfect specimens with a PCGS Mint State 70 grade. This grade means the coins have full, original mint luster and present with no detracting flaws of any kind. First Strike coins are those received within 30 days of the US Mint’s release of 2020 Gold Eagles.
