Prior to the release of the 1/25 oz Austrian Gold Philharmonic Coin, the Austrian Mint had celebrated anniversary date marks in this collection with the release of massive gold coins. In 2004, the 15th anniversary of the series was marked by the release of the Big Phil, a 1,000 Troy oz .9999 pure gold coin with a face value of 100,000 (Euro). In 2009, the 20th anniversary was celebrated with the production of a 20 Troy oz .9999 pure gold version.
In 2014, the 25th anniversary saw the Austrian Mint go the opposite direction of these massive coins by striking the diminutive 1/25 oz coin instead. The coin proved so popular with investors as an affordable gold option that it has remained in production each year since 2014. It is the only coin in the Austrian Gold Philharmonic Series never to have been produced with the Austrian Schillings face value, a practice that ended in 2001 with the 2002 adoption of the Euro in the European Union.
The obverse side of 2020 1/25 oz Austrian Gold Philharmonic Coins features the image of the Great Organ, a massive pipe organ built into the Musikverein. The primary concert hall for the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, the Musikverein is located in the Innere Stadt neighborhood.
On the reverse face of 2020 1/25 oz Austrian Gold Philharmonic coins, you will find a selection of different musical instruments. The design centers on a cello flanked on either side by two violins. Behind these instruments, you will notice a French horn, a bassoon, and a harp.
