On the obverse of 2020 1/20 oz Mexican Silver Libertad Coins, you will find the image of Winged Victory. This image has persisted in Mexico since independence from Spain in the 1820s. It first appeared on Mexican coinage as the obverse design of the gold Centenario introduced in 1921. That same year, it featured on the top of the Mexican Independence Victory Column constructed in Mexico City to mark 100 years of independence.
Winged Victory is depicted in the center of the design field. She holds a wreath crown in her right hand as it is outstretched in front of her. Her left hand holds a set of broken chains at her back as a symbol of freedom from tyranny.
The reverse of 2020 Mexican Silver Libertads features the modern coat of arms for Mexico. This national seal includes a Mexican golden eagle in the center clutching a serpent in its talons and beak. The duo battle for control on the arm of a cactus. Below the seal is a wreath. Above the seal is the inscription of “Estados Unidos Mexicanos.”
