Taekwondo is the perfect design theme for a Republic of Korea series of bullion medals because of its status as a distinctive form of Korean martial arts. The roots of taekwondo are set in the aftermath of World War II. The Japanese Occupation that preceded the war and continued until Japan’s defeat at the hands of the Allies resulted in forms of Japanese and Chinese martial arts coming to the peninsula.
During the Japanese Occupation of the Korean peninsula during the 1930s, traditional forms of Korean martial arts were all but forgotten as Japanese authorities stamped out various Korean cultural traditions. Kwans, or martial arts schools, were established in Korea in 1945 after the war by Korean martial artists with backgrounds in Japanese and Chinese forms of martial arts. The term taekwondo was eventually applied to the new combined forms of martial arts taught in these kwans beginning in the 1940s and 1950s.
The Taegeuk symbol is found on the obverse field of 2020 1/2 oz South Korean Gold Taekwondo Medals. The Taegeuk is a traditional Korean symbol that features prominently on the South Korean national flag. It was first adopted on a national flag in the 1880s. Traditionally captured in red and blue, the red half represents positive forces, while the blue half represents the opposing negative forces.
