When the Reverse Proof coin debuted in 2018, the Mexican Mint limited the release to 1 oz and 1/2 oz gold coins. Mexican Gold Libertads are available currently in three versions. The BU version was the first to feature and debuted in 1981 with releases in 1981, 1991-1994, 2000, and 2002-present. The Proof version was first issued in 1983, again in 1989, in 2004, and 2005-present. These coins offer five weights in total. The 2018 release of the Reverse Proof Gold Libertad introduced a second collectible coin with weights of only 1 oz and 1/2 oz available.
Winged Victory is found on the obverse side of all 2020 Reverse Proof Mexican Gold Libertads. The design features a three-quarter profile view of the statue as she towers over Mexico City from the top of the Mexican Independence Victory Column. Her figure is brilliantly mirrored in this release with the mountains of Popocatepetl and Iztaccihuatl featured in the background with a frosted visual.
Mexico’s coat of arms is found on the reverse of 2020 1/2 oz Reverse Proof Gold Libertads. The image of the national seal is representative of the Mexican government and depicts a golden eagle on a cactus branch as it attempts to devour a rattlesnake. The design of the coat of arms is based on the Codex Mendoza, an artistic record of the Aztec people and the emperors of the Aztec Empire.
