In 1992, the Mexican Mint offered up the first expansion of the Proof Mexican Silver Libertad Coins. Available from 1986 as a 1 oz silver coin only, the collection grew in 1992 to include these 1/2 oz silver coins, along with 1/4 oz, 1/10 oz, and 1/20 oz options. The variety would grow in 1996 with the debut of 2 oz and 5 oz silver coins as well.
The obverse design of all 2020 Proof Mexican Silver Libertad Coins features the image of Winged Victory with the twin volcanic peaks of Popocatepetl and Iztaccihuatl in the distant background field. Winged Victory is known as the Angel of Independence and first featured on a Mexican coin with the 1921 release of the gold Centenario. The twin volcanic mountains located outside of Mexico City and featured in this design derive names from ancient Aztec culture and the mythical story of two lovers.
On the reverse face of 2020 1/2 oz Proof Mexican Silver Libertad Coins, you will find only the modern image of the Mexican Coat of Arms. While the 1 oz and larger coins offer several historic versions of the design alongside the modern seal, the smaller fractional-ounce coins have room only for the modern symbol.
All Proof Mexican Silver Libertad Coins are produced by the Mexican Mint. The oldest operating mint in the Western Hemisphere, the Mexican Mint was founded in 1535 by Spanish conquistadors and today is controlled by Banco de Mexico and the federal government.
