Prior to the formation of the group Queen, Roger Taylor and Brian May performed together in a group known as Smile. Freddie Mercury was the catalyst for the formation of a new band. He was a fan of Smile and encouraged Taylor and May to experiment with new elaborate staging and recording techniques. In 1970, Mercury joined the duo and helped form Queen.
