The 1/2 oz American Gold Eagle saw its highest mintage figure achieved in its debut 1986 release. That year, more than 599,000 coins were sold, but the series has never come close to matching that figure. The next highest mintage came in 1999 when it reached half that mintage at 263,013 coins.
On the obverse side of 2020 1/2 oz American Gold Eagle Coins is an iconic image of Lady Liberty designed by Augustus Saint-Gaudens. Created in 1907, the original design had a circle of 46 stars around Liberty to reflect the number of states in the Union at that time. However, these coins have a circle of 50 stars around Liberty who still carries her torch and olive branch from the original imagery.
The reverse face of 2020 1/2 oz American Gold Eagle Coins bears the design of a family of American bald eagles. The national emblem is featured here with a male eagle in flight over a nest that holds a young hatchling and a female eagle. This design was created in 1986 by Miley Busiek exclusively for the Gold Eagles.
All 2020 American Gold Eagle Coins are a product of the United States Mint. Each one is struck at the West Point Mint and does not feature any mint mark.
