The release of the American Gold Eagle coin in 1986 marked the first time in 152 years that the US Mint issued gold coins with a gold content greater than 90% gold. Starting in 1834, the US Mint moved to lower the gold content of its circulation coins from 22-karat gold, or crown gold, to .900 gold content.
By 1837, the transition was complete. From that point until 1933 when the US ended all gold coining, the nation’s gold coins had just 90% gold content. When the American Gold Eagle debuted with 22-karat gold, it was the purest gold coin in more than a century and a half. At 22-karat gold content, the American Gold Eagle features 91.67% gold, 5.33% copper, and 3% silver in its content.
On the obverse face of 2020 1/2 oz American Gold Eagle Coins is Lady Liberty from Augustus Saint-Gaudens. Her figure is depicted in front-facing relief with a ring of 50 circles around the outer design field. She holds a torch in one hand and an olive branch in the other hand.
The reverse side of the 2020 American Gold Eagle features the family of American bald eagles created by Miley Busiek. Created in 1986, it features exclusively on the Gold Eagle and depicts a male eagle flying over the nest that contains a female and hatchling.
These 2020 1/2 oz American Gold Eagle coins bear a Mint State 69 certification. These coins are near-perfect with full, original mint luster and a maximum of two minor detracting flaws. Examples of acceptable flaws at this level include minuscule contact marks and hairlines outside the primary focal points.
