When the Chiwoo Cheonwang Series was introduced in 2016, the only options available to investors with the initial release were 1 oz silver and 1 oz gold medals. Since that time, the collection has expanded to feature 2 oz and 10 oz options in silver, as well as fractional-ounce medals in gold. 2017 saw the introduction of 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz gold options in the collection. The 1/10 oz Gold Chiwoo Cheonwang remains the most popular of those fractional-ounce medals among North American investors.
As with all others releases in the Chiwoo Cheonwang Series, the 2020 release features a new depiction of Chiwoo Cheonwang for the date mark. However, the 2020 release is the first in the series to also offer a new depiction of Do ggae bi on the obverse. This new bust comes from a work of art owned by the Gyeongju National Museum.
Do ggae bi is featured on the obverse of the 2020 1/10 oz South Korean Chiwoo Cheonwang Gold Medals with more prominent features than previous issues of the series. In addition to bull’s horns now visible on the head, the nostrils, eyebrows, and teeth of the beast are more prominent. Another change is the facial expression as this image of Do ggae bi gives the beast a smile.
Chiwoo Cheonwang is featured in front of the Hell Gate in the reverse design of the 2020 1/10 oz South Korean Chiwoo Cheonwang Gold Medals. The Hell Gate has emerged in the empire of Chiwoo at the Salt Lake, the connection point between the immortal and mortal world. Chiwoo must gather his forces to confront evil before it can take over the world.
These 2020 1/10 oz South Korean Chiwoo Cheonwang Gold Medals are individually sealed inside of assay card packs. The pack features a capsule to house the gold medal and an assay card with authenticating weight, purity, metal content, and serial number information. Of the 1,000-medal mintage, only 250 medals are packaged in these white assay cards.
