Coin Highlights:
Guam is the farthest outpost of the United States anywhere in the world. Across the International Date Line in the Pacific, Guam bills itself as the place “Where America’s Day Starts.” The small island is part of the Northern Mariana Islands chain, but it is part of the Commonwealth of Northern Mariana Islands and enjoys its own governance separate of the CNMI.
The island of Guam was one of the first American outposts in the Pacific to fall to Japanese forces after the attack at Pearl Harbor. In 1944, United States Marines and other American forces stormed the island to retake it from the Japanese. The dense jungles of Guam made for intense fighting. The last Japanese soldier to surrender on Guam wasn’t even discovered until the 1970s.
On the reverse of 2019-P 5 oz Burnished ATB War in the Pacific National Historical Park Silver Coins is the image of American forces landing during the Second Battle of Guam. The battle began with aerial bombardments and battleship bombardments by the US Navy in July 1944. American forces moved onshore on July 21st and had established control of the island by August 10th. 3,000 American soldiers were killed while the Japanese Imperial Forces lost 18,000 troops.
The obverse of 2019 Burnished ATB War in the Pacific National Historical Park Coins includes the left-profile portrait of President George Washington. Similar to the image found on the circulation US quarter, this bust is included along with the “P” mint mark of the Philadelphia Mint which is found behind the President’s neck below the motto “In God We Trust.”
2019-P Burnished ATB War in the Pacific National Historical Park Silver Coins are available to you in US Mint commemorative presentation boxes and come with an individual Certificate of Authenticity.
