The Silver Frosted Una and the Lion coins are reverse frosted products, meaning the coins present with visual elements of frosted background fields and mirrored designs.
William Wyon, a famed British coin sculptor in the 19th century, designed the reverse image used on these coins in 1839 to commemorate the beginning of Queen Victoria’s 63-year reign as Queen of England. Following her coronation in 1837, this design appeared on British 5 Pound sterling gold coins starting in 1839.
The reverse side of 2019 5 oz British Virgin Islands Silver Frosted Una and the Lion Coins includes the Wyon design. Based on the character Lady Una from Edmund Spenser’s 1590 poem The Faerie Queene, Queen Victoria is depicted here as Una walking beside the large male lion and guiding it with a scepter in her right hand. The design was somewhat controversial at the time as it was the first to depict a British monarch as a fictional character.
On the obverse of 2019 5 oz Silver Frosted Una and the Lion Coins is Queen Elizabeth II, the current and longest-reigning British monarch. Her Majesty is featured in a right-profile design developed by Jody Clark specifically for the Pobjoy Mint. This design is similar to the Royal Mint’s fifth-generation design, but includes additional details such as the Queen’s neckline and shoulders.
