This 2019 Germania The Allegories Britannia & Germania Silver Round features the female figures Germania and Britannia on the obverse. Germania is shown wearing a scabbard with a sword at rest inside it, and she’s reaching out to Britannia. A shield rests on the ground in front of her. Britannia stands next to her and holds a trident. She is wearing a Roman helmet and also has a shield resting on the ground in front of her.
The reverse includes an image of a symbolic coat of arms. Symbols depicted include the shield, crown, and the Bicephalous eagle. The eagle is a symbol for Janus, the Roman god of doors and bridges and a patron of contracts. The wild boar on the crest is a symbol of might and the three flowers on the ribbon stand for freedom, integrity and unity. Even the check pattern is symbolic, standing for wisdom. The image of the shield is surrounded by a wreath.
One interesting note related to these rounds is that traditionally when nations are personified, they carry female names. This series plays on that tradition by creating powerful feminine figures that stand in for historical lands on the coins. The figures are mostly based on renderings of Athena, and their names come from the Latin names of various ancient Roman provinces.
With such a limited mintage, the 2019 10 oz Germania The Allegories Britannia & Germania Silver Round is exceedingly rare.
