When Queen Elizabeth I died in 1603 with no children, the heir to the English throne was her closest relative through her cousin Mary, Queen of Scots. Mary’s son, James, was then King of Scotland and merged the two crowns to become King James I of England, King of England and Scotland. In his Royal Arms, he brought with the mythical unicorn adored in Scottish lore.
The reverse of 2019 10 oz British Silver Queen’s Beast Unicorn Coins features the Unicorn of Scotland. Traditionally, the Unicorn of Scotland is a milk-white color with golden mane and hooves wearing a crown around its neck and a chain connecting it to the heraldic shield. A version of that powerful beast is featured here, along with the heraldic shield of Scotland dating to the 13th-century reign of Alexander III, King of Scots. Alexander III’s royal shield features a rampant lion, the same used to this day in Scotland.
On the obverse of 2019 10 oz British Silver Queen’s Beast coins is the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. Her Majesty is the longest-reigning monarch in England’s history and features here in the fifth-generation portrait used during her reign.
