The designs in this series are inspired by the Crowns of Silla. These golden crowns were worn by the rulers of the Silla dynasty between the 5th and 7th centuries. The crowns of the Silla dynasty have become National Treasures in South Korea following their discovery and excavation in Gyeongju, the former capital of the Silla dynasty.
Obverse design elements on 2019 South Korean Gold Crown feature a common design focused on Sam-jok-o. A bird-like figure, this artistic rendition is based on the Korean depictions of the Sun god.
Reverse visuals on 2019 1 oz South Korean Gold Crowns include the depiction of Treasure Number 338. The gold crown of Geumnyeongchong Tumulus is one of just 13 known Silla crowns still available for the world to behold today. A typical Silla-style gold crown, this crown has tree-like prongs that number five in total. This particular crown is the only surviving example of a Silla crown made entirely of gold with no jade inclusions in the design.
KOMSCO is the producer of the South Korean Gold Crowns. Founded in South Korea during the Korean War, KOMSCO provides national minting and currency printing for the Republic of Korea. It also handles the printing of official documents for the nation, such as passports.
