Lion Dollars were among the many early trade dollars released by European nations. Historical records state that Dutch merchants quickly preferred the leeuwendaalder, as it is known in Dutch, over the more highly-valued rijksdaalders as it helped to ensure the concentration of wealth in the Netherlands. Rather than repaying foreign debts in rijksdaalders, merchants began using the so-called lion dollars in 1617.
