The Silverback Gorilla coin program launched from Scottsdale Mint in 2015 and features new obverse designs each year. The coins have alternated between more docile, relaxed images of the silverback and aggressive designs that depict the gorilla letting out a roar in defense of its family group.
2019 1 oz Congo Silver Silverback Gorilla Coins are Brilliant Uncirculated specimens, but have a proof-like visual finish. This means the coins have slightly frosted, matte design elements with background fields that have a mirrored appearance.
On the obverse of the 2019 Congo Silverback Gorilla coin is the image of a massive male gorilla. This year’s depiction captures the male in an aggressive design with his mouth open wide as he roars at a perceived threat that is not visible in the design. Inscriptions on this side of coin include “Congo Silverback Gorilla” above the design field and the coin’s date mark, weight, purity, and metal content.
The silverback gorilla is not a specific species of gorilla, but is a term used to refer to the leader of the family troop. The eldest male gorilla is known as the silverback gorilla and is typically the family member that decides where the troop rests and moves to find new food sources.
The reverse of 2019 1 oz Congo Silverback Gorilla Coins features the national seal of the Republic of Congo. This design includes the national shield, with a rampant lion depicted on its surface. The shield is supported on either side by elephants with a crown above that includes the inscription “Republique du Congo,” the nation’s full name in French.
These 2019 Congo Silver Silverback Gorilla Coins are available with protective capsules for individual purchases or inside of skin boards containing five coins. The skin board individually seals each coin and allows the buyer to separate the five coins, if they so choose, without unsealing the individual coins.
Over the past five releases, the Scottsdale Mint has issued its Silverback Gorilla coins in 1 oz weights and a 1 Kilo option. The 1 oz silver coins are typically available in this BU proof-like option and a colorized version.
