Trade dollars were once issued by various nations in North America and Europe during the 19th century for the purposes of international trade in a common denomination. Many trade dollars were developed based on the Spanish dollar which, at the time, was the dominant form of global currency. Following the Opium Wars between China and Great Britain, Chinese ports were opened and Chinese Trade Dollars began to circulate. Today, 2019 1 oz Chinese Trade Dollar Silver Coins are available to you online from JM Bullion.
Coin Highlights:
By the late 19th century, the Qing Dynasty of China had lost a series of Opium Wars against Great Britain. The result of its defeat was the forced opening of Chinese ports that had previously been closed to global merchants moving goods to and from Asia and Southeast Asia in general.
On the reverse side of the 2019 1 oz Chinese Trade Dollar Silver Coin is the image of a ferocious imperial Chinese dragon. The best snakes through the design field with its head in front-facing relief. There is an ornate design border around the field and engravings of “The East India Company” and “Trade Dollar” are featured around the dragon.
Chinese Trade Dollars were first released in 1889 by the Empress Dowager Cixi, one of the last empresses of the Qing Dynasty. Following the forced opening of China’s ports to outside trade, Empress Cixi began a quest to modernize the kingdom’s economy and launched production of Chinese trade dollars for merchants to use. The original Chinese trade dollars issued at this time were based on the specifications of the Spanish 8 Reales coin. As these new trade dollars proliferated around the globe, they became known as “silver dragons” or “dragon dollars.”
The obverse face of 2019 1 oz Chinese Trade Dollar Silver Coins includes the right-profile portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. This is the fifth-generation design for the Royal Mint of England that was created in 2015 by Jody Clark. St. Helena remains a territory of Britain to this day and uses the Pound Sterling as its currency.
