The 2019 Lunar Year is upcoming and mints around the world issuing lunar-themed coin are gearing up big releases for the Year of the Pig. Great Britain’s lunar coins debuted in 2014 with designs from Chinese-British citizen Wuon-Gean Ho. Ms. Ho has designed all of the images in the Shengxiao Series for the Royal Mint of England since the program’s debut, creating a singular image for use across the silver and gold coins available in the collection.

The 2019 issue year marks the midway point of the Royal Mint’s program, but the final year of the 12-year cycle of the Zodiac. The Chinese lunar calendar follows a 12-year cycle that starts with the Year of the Rat and ends with the Year of the Pig. Despite the timing, the Royal Mint will continue its program through a 12-year cycle.

On the obverse of 2019 1 oz British Silver Year of the Pig Coins, you’ll find the latest effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. Her Majesty is depicted here in right-profile relief in a design created in 2015 by Jody Clark for the Royal Mint. This is the fifth-generation design of the Queen to feature during her long reign.

The reverse side of 2019 British Silver Year of the Pig Coins features a new design for the year. This includes a large sow laying on her side in the foreground with four small piglets feedings from their mom. The background field includes a starry night’s landscape with a small cottage home in the distant background that has smoke rising from its chimney.

Officially founded in 886, the Royal Mint has its origins in the London Mint controlled by Danes occupying London and the surrounding areas in the 9^th century. Since 1279, the country’s various mints have operated as a singular Royal Mint system for England.
