The modern design of the Royal Arms of England was adopted in 1837 with the ascension to the throne of Queen Victoria. The modern design is similar to its most recent predecessor, but as Queen Victoria was not of the House of Hanover the design required the removal of the White Horse of Hanover.

Designed by Eric Sewell, the coat of arms now features a quartered shield. The shield bears the three lions of England in passant guardant stance in two quadrants, with the rampant lion of Scotland in the upper right and the harp of Ireland in the lower left. The harp remains as a symbol of Northern Ireland within the modern United Kingdom, even though its original inclusion represented the Kingdom of Ireland.

On the reverse of 2019 1 oz British Gold Royal Arms Coins is the design from Sewell modernized by Timothy Noad for these coins. The aforementioned shield is featured with the Lion of England supporting it on one side and the Unicorn of Scotland supporting it on the other.

The obverse of 2019 British Gold Royal Arms Coins includes the latest-generation portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. Her Majesty is featured here in right-profile relief in a 2015 design from Jody Clark. It captures the Queen at age 89 and showcases her wearing the Royal Diadem crown.
