Founded in 1194 by Duke Leopold V, the Austrian Mint is one of Europe’s oldest operating mint facilities. The initial funding to launch the mint was a result of a 15 ton silver payment made to Leopold V by England’s King Richard I, better known as Richard the Lionheart, as a ransom for his troops.
