Wiener Neustadt literally translates as “New Vienna” and was purpose-built to defend southeastern Austria from the Kingdom of Hungary during the 12th century. The city was built from nothing around a central castle, the Burg Wiener Neustadt. Funds to construct the castle were provided by Duke Leopold V from the ransom of 15 tonnes of silver paid to him by King Richard I of England to free his forces and allow for safe travel through Austria on their return from the Crusades in the Middle East.
The reverse side of the 2019 Austrian 825th Anniversary Wiener Neustadt Silver Coin includes a design of the original Burg Wiener Neustadt. That initial castle no longer stands within the city, but it was vital in defending the region from outside attacks. Among the attackers pushed back by defenders in the region were the Mongols as they attempted to invade Europe 1241.
On the obverse face of 2019 1 oz Austrian 825th Anniversary Wiener Neustadt Silver Coins is the image of a crusader on horseback. This individual is believed to be one of the soldiers in the army of Duke Leopold V. The primary reason for Leopold V’s capture of King Richard I was a perceived slight during the Third Crusade. Richard I, better known as Richard the Lionheart, had captured Acre and was supposed to be accompanied by the forces of Duke Leopold V of Austria. He did not arrive in time for the battle and the other Western Christian commanders cut him out of the loot from the city.
