Duke Leopold V of Austria was responsible for founding what would become the Austrian Mint back in 1194. Leopold had joined with the British King Richard I, known as Richard the Lionheart, and other European forces during the Crusades of the late-12th century. However, Leopold’s forces arrived late to the battle of Acre and he was denied the spoils of war by his European allies. He later held Richard I captive in Austria as his forces passed through on the way back to England and ransomed him for 15 tonnes of silver.
Leopold V would use that silver to found the Austrian Mint near Hoher Markt. Today, the Austrian Mint in Vienna is the sole mint responsible for the production of Austrian currency as a member of the Euro common currency zone. The mint has been located in Vienna since the 19th century and became the principal mint in 1919 with the formation of the Republic of Austria.
On the obverse of these 2019 1 oz Austrian 825th Anniversary Robin Hood Coins is a common design used throughout the three-coin series. It features the image of an Austrian crusader from Leopold V’s army riding on horseback in left-profile relief. The soldier bears a shield with Leopold’s heraldic animal and carries the battle standard of the Austrian army.
The reverse of 2019 Austrian 825th Anniversary Robin Hood Coins includes the image of Robin Hood. Wearing leather armor and a hood over his head, he draws back two arrows on his bow as he emerges from the woods to fire at his target.
