The Australian Kangaroo coinage began in 1990 with the issuance of the Australian Gold Kangaroo that transitioned from the Australian Gold Nugget design previously issued between 1986 and 1989. The Australian Silver Kangaroo was issued for the first time in 2016 and swiftly followed by these Australian Platinum Kangaroo coins in 2018.
All 2019 1 oz Australian Platinum Kangaroo Coins represent the second release of this popular new platinum coin. The Perth Mint offers these coins individually inside of protective capsules or in bulk purchases of 20 coins in sealed rolls or 100 coins in boxes. The box from the Perth Mint includes five sealed rolls.
The design on the reverse of the 2019 Australian Platinum Kangaroo coins dates to a period of Australian coinage prior to decimalization in 1966. The copper penny designed in 1938 featured a leaping kangaroo on the reverse with the Commonwealth star below. This same leaping kangaroo has been modernized and used intermittently on the Gold Kangaroo bullion coins, as well as proof and bullion versions of the Silver Kangaroo.
On the reverse of 2019 1 oz Australian Platinum Kangaroo Coins, you’ll find the image of the kangaroo leaping from right to left across the coin’s design field. It is surrounded by stylized rays of the sun and includes engravings of the date mark, weight, purity, metal content, and the “P” mint mark of Perth.
The obverse of 2019 Australian Platinum Kangaroos join the other 2019 bullion coins with the debut of the Jody Clark effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. This latest design is actually the sixth to feature on Australian coinage and the first since the 1960s to showcase the Queen’s neckline and shoulders.
