In the obverse design of 2019 1 oz Platinum Dragon Coins, you’ll find the final effigy of Queen Elizabeth II on Australian coins. Designed in 2015 for The Royal Mint, this effigy of Elizabeth II at 89 years old wearing the George IV State Diadem debuted on Australian coins in 2018. This is the sixth effigy of Her Majesty to have featured on Australian coins.
For the reverse of 2019 Australian Platinum Coins, the mint features an elegant depiction of a Chinese dragon. In this design, the snake-like beast is shown with its body curling throughout the design field as it pursues a flaming pearl. Dragons occupy the pinnacle of Chinese cultural symbolism, representing imperial power, wisdom, and celestial benevolence rather than the destructive forces depicted in Western mythology.
The Chinese dragon, or “long,” is considered the ultimate symbol of good fortune and prosperity, controlling rainfall, rivers, and seas essential for agricultural success. Throughout Chinese history, emperors claimed to be descendants of dragons, and the five-clawed dragon became the exclusive symbol of imperial authority, while dragons continue to play central roles in festivals, art, and feng shui practices.
These 2019 1 oz Australian Platinum Dragon Coins are available here with individual plastic flips. The Perth Mint set a maximum mintage of 2,500 coins for this release in 2019. However, the mint reported selling only 2,099 coins, resulting in only 2,099 specimens making it into the hands of investors.
