2019 is the 150th anniversary of the discovery of the largest gold nugget in Australian history. The massive specimen was located just 3 cm below the surface of the ground in Bulldog Gully in Moliagul, Victoria, Australia when it was discovered on February 5, 1869. Gold nuggets formed the backbone of an original gold bullion coin series from the Perth Mint in the 1980s and returns now for a special release. Right now, 2019 1 oz Australian Gold Nugget Coins are available to purchase online from JM Bullion.
Coin Highlights:
Each 2019 1 oz Australian Gold Nugget Coin available to you in this product listing comes with an individual protective plastic capsule to house the specimen. The coins in this release are available in Brilliant Uncirculated condition and have a mint mark from the Perth Mint present on the reverse.
The Welcome Stranger Gold Nugget was first discovered by John Deason on February 5, 1869. He found while poking around at the base of a tree in Moliagul in the state of Victoria in Australia. He recovered the gold nugget until the evening hours and returned with his friend Richard Oates to dig it out. The two men had discovered a massive gold nugget weighing 66 kilogram and worth 10,000 pounds at the time. That’s the equivalent of $3 to $4 million today.
On the reverse of the 2019 1 oz Australian Gold Nugget Coins is the replication of the shape of the actual Welcome Strange Gold Nugget. When Deason and Oates brought the nugget to a local bank to have it weighed, it had to be split over an anvil because it was too big for the bank’s scales to measure.
The obverse of 2019 Australian Gold Nugget Coins includes the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. Her Majesty is featured here in the latest sixth-generation design for Australian coinage. It was created in Jody Clark and based on his fifth-generation Royal Mint of England design unveiled in 2016. The primary difference is the inclusion of the Queen’s neckline and shoulders in this design.
