American Platinum Eagle coins joined the American Eagle Series in 1997 as the third metallic option after the 1986 debut of the Gold Eagle and Silver Eagle. The Platinum Eagle has had a rocky production run in the bullion option. Available annually from 1997 to 2008, the coin was not produced between 2009 and 2013.
The United States Mint brought the coin back in 2014, but again halted production in 2015. Since 2016, the US Mint has resumed annual production of the American Platinum Eagle, with one big change. The coins were originally offered as 1 oz platinum coins along with 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz options. Since 2014, the coins are only available in the 1 oz weight.
On the obverse of 2019 1 oz American Platinum Eagle coins is the image of the face of the Statue of Liberty. This close-up vision of her face and head was created in 1997 by John Mercanti. Mr. Mercanti created the modern heraldic eagle design for the Silver Eagle in 1986 and served as the 12th Chief Engraver of the United States Mint from 2006 to 2010.
The reverse of 2019 American Platinum Eagles includes a design from Thomas D. Rogers. Mr. Rogers was a US Mint sculptor and engraver, and his design of an eagle soaring over the continent is special in this series. Not only has it appeared on the reverse of bullion coins every year since 1997, but it is also the only design to have ever featured twice on the reverse of the Proof Platinum Eagles (1997 and 2017).
All of these 2019 1 oz American Platinum Eagle coins are near-perfect specimens. Mint State 69 coins have full, original mint luster with a maximum of two minor detracting flaws. Those flaws are limited in nature to minuscule contact marks or hairlines and must be found only outside the primary focal points.
