Neil Hollis designed this coin’s reverse field that features a mother humpback whale swimming through the ocean with its young calf. The humpback whale is a species of baleen whale and the average adult ranges in length from 39 feet to 52 feet. Among the largest animals in the world, the average humpback weights anywhere between 25 and 30 metric tons.
The reverse face of 2019 1/3 oz Australian Platinum Humpback Whale Coins includes Hollis’ design of a mother whale and her young calf. The humpback migrates a total of 16,000 miles each year between its typical feeding grounds in the polar waters of the world to its breeding grounds in tropical and subtropical waters.
Due to their size, humpback whales were once a primary target of the whaling industry. The result of that targeting nearly pushed the species to extinction. Today, hunting has decreased, but the whales still suffer losses due to entanglement in commercial fishing gear, collisions with ships, and noise pollution.
On the obverse of 2019 1/3 Australian Platinum Humpback Whale coins is the latest effigy of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II to grace Australian coins. This is the sixth design to feature on Australian coinage and is based on Jody Clark’s fifth-generation portrait introduced by the Royal Mint of England in 2016. All 2019 bullion coins from the Perth Mint now feature this design, which is the first since the 1960s to depict the Queen’s neckline and shoulders.
The Perth Mint is the oldest operating facility in Australia and operates independently of the Royal Australian Mint in Canberra.
