When American Gold Eagle coins were introduced by the United States Mint in 1986, the coins were the first gold coins released by the nation since 1933 and the purest gold coins available since 1837. American gold coins from 1794 to 1834 were crown gold alloys of 22-karat gold, but by 1837 gold content had been dropped to .900.
From 1837 to 1933, all American gold coins were issued with this .900 gold content. It was in 1933 that US gold coin production ceased. President Roosevelt halted gold coin production and ordered the collection of all coins in circulation for melting and disbursement to the Treasury as gold bullion bars to shore up gold reserves during the Great Depression.
On the obverse of 2019 1/2 oz American Gold Eagle Coins, you’ll find the image of Lady Liberty. The design of Liberty featured on these coins was created in 1907 by Augustus Saint-Gaudens for use on the $20 Gold Double Eagle coin. The design depicted Liberty marching out of Washington DC with a torch and olive branch. She is surrounded in this design by 50 stars; one for each state in the Union.
The reverse of 2019 American Gold Eagle Coins includes the design of American bald eagles in their nest. As a male flies over the family nest with an olive branch in its talons, a female within the nest offers her wing as shelter to a young hatchling.
