Somalia Gold Elephant Coins are part of the African Wildlife Series from the Bavarian State Mint. The coins were initially issued from 1999 to 2003 as the Zambian Elephant and switched to the Somalia Elephant in 2004. Since that time, the series has taken off in terms of both demand and variety. The 2016 release of the series saw an increase in the number of coins available in both the silver and gold collections, with the gold collection gaining a 1/50 oz coin. In 2017, expansion occurred again with the introduction of these 1/2 gram gold coins.
On the obverse side of the 2019 1/2 Gram Somalia Gold Elephant Coin is a depiction of the Somali coat of arms. The national emblem features a crowned shield with a background field of horizontal lines and a single star at the center. The shield is flanked by leopards on either side and features crossed spears and fern leaves below that are draped in a ribbon.
The reverse face of the 2019 Somalia Gold Elephant Coin comes with the image of an African bush elephant. In this year’s exclusive design, the bush elephant is depicted near a body of water that stretches off into the distant background. The elephant is making a display of its features and size by raising its trunk and flapping out its ears. The sun rises into the sky in the background as a bird flies in front of it in the foreground.
