When it comes to the Proof Mexican Gold Libertads, the series has an odd history. The first coin was produced in 1 oz gold in 1983. The next release of the coin came in 1989 with a 1/2 oz option. Following that, a 1/4 oz coin was issued in 2004. Each of these was issued only in the years indicated. It wasn’t until 2005 that 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, 1/10 oz, and 1/20 oz Proof Gold Libertad Coins were struck all at the same time and continued in production going forward.
On the obverse of 2019 Proof Mexican Gold Libertad Coins is the image of Winged Victory. This symbol of resistance and eventual Mexican victory in the nation’s fight for independence from Spain is based on the Roman goddess Victoria, the goddess of victory. Her figure was featured on the gold Centenario in 1921 and sits atop the Mexican Independence Victory Column in Mexico City.
The reverse of 2019 1/10 oz Proof Mexican Gold Libertad Coins bears the modern coat of arms for Mexico. The official seal of the nation depicts a golden eagle perched on a cactus as it battles with a serpent using its talons and beak to control the beast. There is a wreath below the seal and the words “Estados Unidos Mexicanos” above.
