Proof American Silver Eagle coins are struck to meet demand by the United States Mint. Originally issued with mintage caps, the demand for silver in the 21st century has seen the US Mint abandon mintage caps.
The 2018 Proof American Silver Eagle coin in this listing is available within its original blue-velvet, satin-lined US Mint presentation case. Also included with your purchase is a Certificate of Authenticity for your individual coin.
Mintage of proof coins is often highest in its very first year of issue, but rising demand for silver has pushed the Silver Eagle proof near its all-time high of 1.446 million from 1986. The highest mintage years aside from 1986 include 1.092 million in 2006 on the 20th anniversary, 947,355 in 2011 on the 25th anniversary, and 944,757 in 2014.
On the obverse of all 2018 Proof American Silver Eagle Coins is Adolph A. Weinman’s iconic Liberty design. Known as Walking Liberty, it depicts a classic figure of Liberty as she strides toward the setting sun with the American flag draped across her shoulders. The design originally appeared on the US half-dollar coin from 1916 to 1947.
The reverse of Proof American Silver Eagle coins features the heraldic eagle of the United States. First used in 1794, this image has been updated and reused on countless occasions. This modern version was created in 1986 for the Silver Eagles by John Mercanti, a former Chief Engraver of the United States Mint.
All Proof American Silver Eagle Coins are struck by the United States Mint at its West Point Mint facility. These coins feature a “W” mint mark on the reverse side below the olive branch in the eagle’s talons.
