When the United States Mint introduced the American Gold Eagle coins in 1986, there were four options in the bullion version and just one in the proof version. While the modern Gold Eagle collection features four bullion, four proof, and one burnished coin, the 1 oz Proof American Gold Eagle was the first collectible coin offered by the mint in this series. Today, 2018-W 1 oz Proof American Gold Eagle Coin is available to you online from JM Bullion.
Coin Highlights:
The United States Mint phased in the production of Proof American Gold Eagles. The US Mint is legally obligated to coin the bullion version of the Gold Eagle to meet demand each year, so the first release in 1986 featured all four bullion weights, but only the 1 oz Proof American Gold Eagle.
In that year, the Proof Gold Eagle’s 1 oz coin sold 446,290 coins. That is nearly four times larger than the next greatest mintage figure in the series, which was 147,498 in 1987. This year’s 2018 1 oz Proof American Gold Eagle has a mintage capped at 25,000 coins, meaning even a complete sellout at the US Mint would result in the fourth-lowest mintage in program history.
All 2018-W 1 oz Proof American Gold Eagle Coins here are PR70 specimens according to the PCGS. Known as Proof 70, these coins maintain full, original mint luster and lack all detracting flaws. The Deep-cameo, or DCAM, designation denotes proof coins with strong, frosted design elements overlaying deeply-mirrored, clear background field.
These Proof American Gold Eagles have a First Strike label in the slab. The FS label is for coins that arrive for certification at the PCGS within the first 30 days of the 2018 issue date set by the US Mint.
On the obverse of 2018-W 1 oz Proof American Gold Eagle Coin is the image of Liberty. This design was created in 1907 by Augustus Saint-Gaudens, and captures a brilliant figure of Liberty walking toward the future with a torch in her right hand and an olive branch in her left hand.
The reverse of all Proof American Gold Eagle Coins features Miley Busiek’s bald eagle design. Her creation shows a male eagle flying to the nest where a female eagle is watching over the hatchlings.
