Proof American Gold Eagle coins have not always had a mintage cap, but 2018 release will feature a uniquely low mintage limit. The first use of a mintage cap on the Proof American Gold Eagle coin came in 1993, and that cap has changed over time from one year to the next based on precious metal prices and perceived demand for the coins.

After several issue years with a higher mintage cap, the United States Mint has opted to deliver 2018 Proof American Gold Eagle coins with a very low mintage cap. The highest mintage is 25,000 for the 1 oz coin in the series, while these ½ oz Proof American Gold Eagle coins have a joint-low mintage of just 7,100 coins alongside the ¼ oz option.

Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ iconic depiction of Lady Liberty appears on the obverse of the 2018-W ½ oz Proof American Gold Eagle Coin. Originally introduced in 1907 by the US Mint on the $20 Gold Double Eagle, it was created by Saint-Gaudens and used just months after his death from illness.

The reverse of the Proof American Gold Eagle coin bears the American bald eagle design from Miley Busiek. Her design features a male eagle flying over the nest where a female eagle watches over hatchlings, and this design is found only on the American Gold Eagles from the US Mint.

The 2018-W ½ oz Proof American Gold Eagle coins listed here are perfect specimens with a PF70 grade from the NGC. Coins in this condition have full, original mint luster with no detracting flaws.
