When the American Gold Eagle coins debuted in 1986 from the United States Mint, the bullion coins were available in 1 oz and three fractional weights. The Proof American Gold Eagle, however, debuted with only the 1 oz option available. The fractional weights were phased into the series in 1987 and 1988, with the ½ oz unveiled in 1987. This was followed by the ¼ oz and 1/10 oz coins in 1988.
From the moment the 1/10 oz Proof American Gold Eagle coin was introduced, it has proven more popular than the other two fractional-weight coins in the series. Since 1988, the ½ oz and ¼ oz coins have never had a higher mintage figure than the 1/10 oz Proof Gold Eagle coin. For 2018, the United States Mint has introduced extremely low mintage caps for the series, limiting the 1/10 oz Proof Gold Eagle to just 22,000 coins for the year.
On the obverse of all 2018-W 1/10 oz Proof American Gold Eagle coins is Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ 1907 depiction of Liberty. She is featured in a front-facing profile as she walks forward from the nation’s capital city.
The reverse of the 1/10 oz Proof American Gold Eagle coin bears the American bald eagle, just as all American Eagle Series coins do. However, this depiction of a male eagle flying over the female and hatchlings in the nest below is unique the Gold Eagles.
All 2018 1/10 oz Proof Gold Eagles available here today are PR70 coins, which the PCGS considers perfect. You’ll notice full, original mint luster and a complete lack of detracting flaws. The DCAM designation is for proof coins with strong, frosted matte finishes on the designs and deeply-mirrored, clear background fields.
First Strike coins are those received by the PCGS within the first 30 days of their release by the United States Mint. We encourage JM Bullion customers to contact us with questions at 800-276-6508. You can also chat with us live online or simply send us an email.
