Gold sovereign coins were issued by the United Kingdom from 1489 to 1603, and then ceased for a period of time. The modern Great Britain Gold Sovereign Coin was first issued in 1817 with the same design concepts as the original coins upon which it was based. The reigning monarch is always featured on the obverse, with St. George captured on the reverse in battle with a dragon.
