The Mexican Mint began to introduce new versions of collectible Proof Silver Libertad Coins in 2015. That first release was the reverse proof 1 oz silver coin in the series, but in 2017 things began to quickly expand. In this year, the 2 oz and 5 oz proof silver coins were added to the reverse proof release. Additionally, the Mexican Mint added an antique option in the 1 oz, 2 oz, and 5 oz silver ranges.
On the obverse of the 2018 5 oz Reverse Proof Mexican Silver Libertad Coin is a depiction of the figure known as the Angel of Independence. Often referred to simply as Winged Victory, the image holds up a crown wreath in one hand while clutching a set of broken chains in the other hand. The statue of Winged Victory was made from copper and bronze in 1910 and hoisted to the top of the newly-constructed Mexican Independence Victory Column in 1921. The statue’s construction date marks the 100th anniversary of the start of Mexico’s war of independence with Spain, while the column’s construction marked the 100th anniversary of formal independence and victory in the war.
The reverse side of the 2018 Reverse Proof Mexican Silver Libertad comes with a total of 11 versions of the Mexican coat of arms. In the center, you will find the modern version of the seal with a large Mexican golden eagle fighting a serpent. The duo is on a cactus branch with a cactus wreath below and “Estados Unidos Mexicanos” above. Around the edge, 10 historic versions of the same seal are featured.
