On the obverse of the 2018 Proof Silver Libertad coin is the image of the coat of arms for Mexico. The nation’s official seal depicts an eagle resting on a cactus branch as it is locked in battle with a serpent. The seal is surrounded immediately by “Estados Unidos Mexicanos” and a wreath below. Around the outside are 10 historic depictions of the same design. Only the 1 oz, 2 oz, and 5 oz Silver Libertads have this additional design element.
The reverse of the 2018 5 oz Proof Mexican Silver Libertad Coin features the image of Winged Victory as the central figure of the design. Based upon the Greek Goddess of Liberty designs, this image is known as Winged Victory and was central to the Mexican people during their war for independence from Spain. She holds high above her head a laurel wreath symbolizing freedom of governance and holds in her left hand the broken chains of servitude.
All Mexican Silver Libertad coins are struck by the Mexican Mint. Founded in 1535 by Spanish conquistadors, the Mexican Mint is the oldest operating facility in the Western Hemisphere.
