In 1996, the Mexican Mint introduced two larger-weight options in the Silver Libertad collection. These coins were available in 2 oz silver and 5 oz silver options, with low mintage figures that often fell below those of the popular, but also low, fractional coins. For example, in 1996, the 5 oz coin had a mintage of 20,000 compared to 50,000 for each of the fractional weights.
The 1996 issue of the 2 oz Silver Libertad remains its highest mintage year, with only 2009 coming close at 46,000. The 50,000 coins struck in 1996 is more than double many of the other high-mintage years (2009 aside), with other high mintage years including 2012 with 18,600 and 2015 with 20,100.

On the obverse of the Mexican Silver Libertad coins you’ll find an intricate design full of imagery significant in Mexican culture. In the foreground is Winged Victory, a symbol of Mexican resistance during the revolutionary war against Spain. In the background, the twin volcanic peaks of Popocatepetl and Izztacihuatl named after a pair of Aztec lovers whose lives ended in tragedy.
The reverse of 2018 2 oz Mexican Silver Libertad coins bears the modern coat of arms in the center, with 10 historic versions surrounding the design. 2 oz silver coins have more surface area, allowing for the inclusion of the historic depictions of the coat of arms along with the modern design of the bald eagle, rattlesnake, and cactus branch.
All Silver Libertad coins are struck by the Mexican Mint. Controlled today by Banco de Mexico and the federal government, the Mexican Mint is the oldest in the Western Hemisphere having opened in 1535.
