The Lunar Series II coins for the Perth Mint are all designed by Ing Ing Jong. Her creative illustrations have appeared on both the gold and silver coins in the Lunar Series II collection since 2013. Jong originally joined the Perth Mint as a coin designer in 2011.
For each Lunar Series II release, there is a different design for the silver and gold coins. While the theme remains the same, such as the Year of the Dog for the 2018 issue, the specific designs differ. Her silver coin design for 2018 featured a German Shepherd, while the Labrador Retriever anchors the gold design.
All 2018 2 oz Australian Gold Dog Coins are available in BU condition. Coins in this condition have no signs of wear and tear, though you may notice the presence of breaks in the luster, spotted surfaces, or contact marks from the production process at the mint.
On the obverse of all Australian Gold Dog Coins is Queen Elizabeth II’s image. This right-profile effigy is the fourth-generation design of Her Majesty since her ascension to the British throne in 1952. The design comes from Ian Rank-Broadley and was created in 1998.
The reverse of the 2018 2 oz Australian Gold Dog includes Jong’s latest Lunar Series II design. Bearing the image of a Labrador Retriever, this rugged breed of dog is depicted on a rocky outcrop with a stylized pine tree adorning the background field. Additional engravings include “Year of the Dog,” the Perth Mint’s mint mark, and the Chinese character for dog.
Australia’s Perth Mint opened in 1899 as the third and final British Royal Mint facility in the country. Today it remains as the only one of those three in operation and is the oldest operating mint in the country.

“Spectacular specimen. Queens’s representation is gleamingly polished. More importantly, the ‘golden lab’ is nobly honored. Tasteful Chinese esthetic. The 2 oz heft is appreciable and noteworthy. I have been anticipating this coin for several years. It has exceeded my expectations. This has now advanced to my most favored piece.”
