The US Trade Silver Dollar was available from 1873 to 1885 from the United States Mint. The coins were designed to compete with other large silver trade coins already circulating throughout East Asia. The US Trade Silver Dollar was designed by William Barber, the British-born engraver who served as the Chief Engraver of the United States Mint from 1869 to 1879.
On the obverse of the 2018 1 oz St. Helena US Trade Silver Dollar Coin is the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. Her Majesty is featured here in a full right-profile portrait representing the fifth-generation design. The portrait includes the Queen wearing the royal diadem crown with her neck and shoulders visible as she wears a necklace as well.
The reverse of the St. Helena US Trade Silver Dollar Coin includes Barber’s design for the US Trade Silver Dollar of the 19th century. Barber’s design depicted Liberty seated and facing toward the Far East as she extends an olive branch of peace. Her figure is surrounded by 13 stars and engravings on this coin include “The East India Company” and “Trade Dollar.”
All coins in this series are issued by St. Helena. The small volcanic island in the South Atlantic and is a part of the British Overseas Territory of Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha. St. Helena is the second-oldest overseas territory of the United Kingdom behind Bermuda.
