The Krugerrand bullion series launched in 1967 as a vehicle for the promotion of South African gold. The coins were available in several gold weights only until 2017, with the 50th-anniversary celebration that year resulting in the introduction of the first-ever silver coin in the series. The first Silver Krugerrand issued that year was a Premium Uncirculated coin. In 2018, the new Brilliant Uncirculated coin was introduced.
Paul Kruger is featured on the obverse of all 2018 South African Krugerrand Coins. This effigy of Kruger was created in the final decade of the 19th century and originally featured on the coinage of the South African Pound in the 1890s. It was revised and revived for the 1967 release of the Gold Krugerrand.
A Springbok antelope is depicted in the reverse design of 2018 1 oz Silver Krugerrand Coins. The Springbok is the official symbol of the nation of South Africa, the Springbok is a species of antelope that inhabits the southern regions of the African continent to include the Republic of South Africa.
