The HMS Endeavour was commissioned in the Royal Navy on 26 May 1768, and almost immediately set out on a journey of unbelieve magnitude for her era. Leaving Plymouth, UK in August 1768, the HMS Endeavour rounded Cape Horn and arrived in Tahiti in 1769. Captained by James Cook, the Endeavour reached the coast of New Zealand by September 1769 and became the first European vessel to arrive there since the Heemskerck 127 years before.
On the obverse of the 2018 1 oz Rwandan HMS Endeavour Nautical Ounce Silver Coin is a depiction of the impressive ship as it sails the world’s oceans. Endeavour’s journey didn’t end in New Zealand. The vessel reached Australia’s east coast in April 1770, sailed north along the Australian coast, and eventually rounded the Cape of Good Hope in March 1771 before returning to Dover, UK on 12 July 1771, three years after its departure from England.
The reverse side of the Rwandan HMS Endeavour Nautical Ounce Silver Coin includes the coat of arms for the nation of Rwanda, along with the engravings of the national bank of Rwanda and the coin’s face value in Rwandan Francs.
