The HMS Endeavor was launched in June 1764 in Plymouth, England. The ship was commissioned as a Royal Navy research vessel and served on various missions before becoming world famous under the command of Lieutenant James Cook. Lt. Cook commanded the vessel from 1768 to 1771 on its voyage from Plymouth to Australia and New Zealand. The mission marked the first time Europeans had reached New Zealand and the east coast of the Australian continent.
On the obverse side of 2018 1 oz Proof Rwandan Silver Endeavor Nautical Ounce Coins is a depiction of the HMS Endeavor. The Endeavor was actually launched under a different name and renamed by the Royal Navy when it acquired the vessel. After its iconic voyage to Australia and New Zealand, the ship met a less-than-glorious demise when it served as a prison ship off the US coast during the American Revolution. It was eventually scuttled off the coast of Rhode Island.
