In the Proof Native American Dollar Series, the various tribes of North America are represented in individual coin releases. Each proof silver coin features a different tribe from the continent and is issued with the name of a state that includes the historical homeland of that tribe. Also featured on the coins is an animal species native to that region and vital to the history of the tribe.
For this latest release, the Wampanoag people are represented. In the 17th and 18th century, the Wampanoag were a loose confederacy of several different tribes living in the region of the United States now known as New England. The historic range of the tribe includes most of Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, and even parts of New York’s Long Island.
On the obverse of the 2018 1 oz Proof Rhode Island Wampanoag Shark Silver Coin is the depiction of a Wampanoag tribal member. Flourishing in the 17th and 18th centuries, an epidemic struck the tribe between 1615 and 1619 that decimated its population and made it easier for early English settlers in the Massachusetts Bay Colony to gain a foothold on the continent.
The reverse of the Proof Rhode Island Wampanoag Shark Silver Coin is the depiction of a creature known as the catshark. Sometimes referred to as the Wampanoag catshark or even simply as the dogfish, this species is common along the Atlantic coastline of North America in the Massachusetts region.
All Proof Rhode Island Wampanoag Shark Silver Coins are produced with traditional proof visuals present, such as frosted elements on the design surface and mirrored elements on the background field.
