Each of the 2018 1 oz Proof New Jersey Lenape Thoroughbred Horse Silver Coins in this listing comes from the Native American Mint’s Proof Silver Dollar Series. The coins in this collection are struck on behalf of North American tribal nations, each of which enjoys sovereign state status within the United States. The designs in the series reflect a tribal member on the obverse, with an animal on the reverse either important to the life and culture of the tribe or one which tribal members were likely to come in contact with historically.
For the New Jersey release in the series, the Lenape people are featured along with the official state animal. The thoroughbred horse was assigned as the state’s official animal in 1977. New Jersey is the location of the US Equestrian Team and is also the home of The Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association.
On the obverse of the 2018 1 oz Proof New Jersey Lenape Thoroughbred Horse Silver Coin is the image of a Lenape tribal member. Engravings on this side identify the tribe, year of issue, weight, purity, metal content, and face value of the coin. Proof Silver Dollars from the Native American Mint are backed by the tribes, but are not legal tender in the United States.
The Lenape people are historically indigenous to the northeastern woodlands of Canada and the United States. Traditional homelands for the tribe extend from New Jersey, eastern Pennsylvania and the Delaware River watershed to New York City, western Long Island, and the Lower Hudson Valley. As European colonies expanded, and later the United States as well, the Lenape migrated to new homelands in Ontario.
Native American Mint is the production facility of the Native Proof Silver Dollar Series. Each coin features a One Dollar face value backed by the issuing tribe, but only the United States Mint has the authority to coin legal tender currency in America.
