The Proof American Gold Eagle Coin from the United States Mint is the official collectible version of the nation’s gold bullion coin. Introduced in 1986, at that point in time only these 1 oz gold coins were available. Today, the Proof Gold Eagle has four weights for collectors to choose from when shopping. Coin Highlights:
For the first time in recent history, the United States Mint is dramatically lowering the mintage caps on the Proof American Gold Eagle coins. The first use of mintage caps came in 1993, and in the subsequent years mintage caps have been adjusted up or down as demand for the coins rose and fell among collectors.
In 2018, the United States Mint has set a mintage cap of just 25,000 coins total for the 1 oz Proof American Gold Eagle Coin. If the full allotment sells out from the US Mint, it will still represent one of the lowest-ever mintages in the program’s history. The three fractional-weight coins also have mintage caps for 2018.
Also new in 2018, the United States Mint offers new packaging for the popular gold collectible coin. The US Mint will now package its Proof American Gold Eagle coins individually in satin-lined burgundy velvet presentation cases, which are housed inside of a burgundy outer box. All coins in the series still feature a Certificate of Authenticity.
On the obverse of the 2018 1 oz Proof American Gold Eagle Coin is the image of Liberty created by Augustus Saint-Gaudens. Originally used on the $20 Gold Double Eagle from 1907 to 1933, this depiction of Liberty showcases her figure as a guiding force for the nation. She strides confidently forward from Washington DC holding aloft her torch and an olive branch.
The reverse of the Proof American Gold Eagle Coin bears the bald eagle design created exclusively for this coin series by Miley Busiek. It features a male eagle returning to the family nest where a female closely guards the hatchlings.
