The pronghorn antelope is not even an antelope species, but it does bear a close resemblance to the actual antelope species of the Old World. The creatures evolved on a parallel line with the Old Word species but are unique to North America. The pronghorn is actually a species of artiodactyl mammal. It is known across the continent as the American antelope, prong buck, pronghorn antelope, or prairie antelope.
Pronghorn antelopes come from the family Antilocapridae that used to feature as many as 12 different species on the North American continent. Today, however, the pronghorn is the only surviving member of the species.
In the Wild Canada Series, the Royal Canadian Mint issues the Canadian Silver Maple Leaf with a reverse proof finish and a privy mark representing each of the animals from the original Canadian Wildlife Series (2011-2013). The pronghorn antelope was fifth in the original series and appears fifth in this collection of silver for sale.
On the reverse of 2018 1 oz Pronghorn Antelope Privy Canadian Silver Maple Leafs is the sugar maple leaf design with a pronghorn privy mark. The coins are reverse proof specimens with mirrored design fields and strong, frosted backgrounds.
The obverse of 2018 Pronghorn Antelope Privy Canadian Silver Maple Leaf Reverse Proof coins features the right-profile portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. This is the fourth-generation design of Her Majesty and was created in 2003 by Susanna Blunt.
